The Threat of Prejudice.

Testimony Posted on Wed, December 10, 2014 08:51:08

The Threat of Prejudice.

The idea that prejudice, bias or the offensiveness of any intolerances could so spoil this society we live in, still seems wrong in this modern age, where knowledge and honest information is so readily available. Prejudice is all too often used to disguise any lack of understanding we might have concerning different people, or their differing ideas. We can be too easily accusing and may even misuse terms so as to fit with what we consider is our own position with regard to those we live alongside. Of course, prejudice must never become confused with bigotry. Bigotry, which is an evil all too easily converted from simple intolerances, must never be tolerated. We are all too often swayed by an irrational fear of what is different in people and this is especially true where those people we meet might have a disability. We either find it hard or difficult coming to terms with what makes us feel uncomfortable, or we simply ignore those we come into contact with.

Those who differ from us, and make us simply walk the other way when we see them, expose us to a frailty that is lacking of tolerance. Of course we can all too easily class this form of prejudice as mere ignorance, which all too often has been allowed to be built upon, but knowledge is the best preventative for such ignorance. That an ignorance-based foundation leads us into an intolerance, that is wholly built upon a fear we know is irrational, can be countered by opening up to the benefits of education. Sadly, we tend to use the term prejudice too frequently. This is a truth, that when the term is confused, it is a concern that has no real grounding in any intolerant way, and must be seen as facing up to any concern we might have.

In other than a hate-filled bigotry, which is easily discredited, prejudice can simply be the fear of what we must work toward. That said, we must never use whatever personal preferences we have to sway our fundamental humanity. Nor should we allow any of our own fears to persuade others to hold with a view that might well be alien to them. Any influence we can instil into people must always be of a positive nature, and we must hold any deep felt negative impressions to ourselves. All too often we are ill disposed to others who somehow appear different, and for whatever reason, we must be persuaded into accepting the differences that are in all people. Firstly, and if the motive is colour, race or even physical or emotional impairment, it is more essential to avoid any prejudice becoming a self destructive racism, a bigotry or even a hatred.

We are all influenced by what is about us, and all too often that influence can appear as an impartiality which is either born out of resentment, some irrational fear or, more likely, a lack of empathy or understanding of the difference in others. We can so easily lack the simple ability to appreciate the very difficulty that is faced by other individuals, who either struggle to cope with this world, or have an inability to express their own concerns. We have a common human bond to all of those around us and we should have a greater concern for all of those who are simply so disabled they have no ability to influence at all how we perceive them. We are always inclined to keep to our own, be they our neighbours, or family members or even those we consider are exclusively of our own nation. What that must never become is a nationalist tendency that seeks to preclude others of differing nations who simply have a wish to work, live and coexist alongside us.

I am concerned here that the Irish State is somehow becoming less altruistic than she has been remarkably acknowledged for over the past years. Yes, more and more foreigners are descending upon this Emerald Isle that we inhabit, but that more than compensates for the favourable terms accorded our own emigrees who landed on American, British, Australian and nearly every other national soil of this world. Ireland’s greatest legacy has been in its own ability to shed its most important export, its Children. In order that Ireland should contribute to a more balanced worldview, the centuries have borne witness to the establishment of Irish enclaves all over the world.

We should therefore recognise the migratory nature of other peoples and understand that very need, whether it is a cultural or financial essential for them to migrate to us, a welcoming shore! I am actually surprised that when we quote education as a model of learning, how can we then be so absenting of the truth that is in that search for learning and knowledge. We have not learnt from our own history, which has seen us stretching our own influence to the far corners of the World.

True, that spread has often been met by the destructive menace of ‘racism’, set against generations of our forefathers. It is a timely reminder therefore of the pernicious threat, that is proposed by the intolerance within racism. Clearly there is more of an expression of this rancid hate, that we have been exposed to, and it is a rabid hatred too often expressed. For those of us seeking our own way out of our own financial restrictions, we can too readily blame others. This tiny Isle is now no longer immune to such hatreds, as were felt by those Irish who sought to afford their own families at home, a financial lifeline and stability that was not often available to us at home.

What we should have noticed, when mixed with indifference, is that hatred can become an everyday instance that is, and this is seemingly in the awareness of the public in general, as too socially acceptable? We can all too easily borrow from the flavour of hatred to lend a similar feeling of hatred that the newcomer can then feel. That said, it is essential that each of us stands guard against this pernicious evil that is hidden behind Race Hate. It is even more important these days that we speak up and stand for the rights of all individuals, to prevent the spread of any radical or racial hatred. It is also an essential in our moral duty as a Catholic and a Christian of Jesus’ Church.

We should clearly understand that the message for any future has to be the hope, and for all future generations, that we must learn from the irrelevance of any difference, that has held up the progress of mankind since we emerged from the dark ages. There is this despising feeling in some people who see difference as objectionable and it is displayed with such detestation toward other people, that the very tangibility of such hatred can be so visibly witnessed. We can all add weight to that clarion call, for an acceptance of the understanding of all peoples, and it should come with a compassionate concern toward all of those within humanity.

Words should always articulate the heart-felt meaning of truth and honesty, and that very integrity, ordained by God, should not allow us to treat another human being without respect, but with reverence and in accordance with Jesus’ law to love each other as we would wish to be loved. I have a concern, as we face up to any situation we were supposed to guard against and even prevent, is that the simple twist of fate that presents newer peoples to our shores must be acknowledged as a bonus to our own humanity. The past lessons should not be forgotten and it should not therefore, hurt the future for us all that might be hindered with any intolerance to others? We can all make a difference, even if we just let our true feelings be known!

Theirs is the lost argument! It is lost in terms of the denial of Truth and also, when the bullying denier resorts to personal abuse and a crude absurdity in denying veracity of the Facts that are well known, they lack even an iota of credibility. The intrinsic credibility of all history, and The Holocaust History especially, cannot be reviewed, will not be revised by tainted and questionable efforts to deceive those they wish to influence, nor will it withstand any close scrutiny. The more these individuals personalise their failed reason, which is only enhanced by an illiterate effort that is quite tangible, then the more their effort will fail. Any lack of tolerance on their part can only add to their wasted and marginalised position.

Their desired revision to reshape any part of our history, even if they consider The Holocaust in their overtly hate-filled terms, will nullify all of History. We either accept that History belongs to us all, in which case deserves nothing less than the Truth, or we succumb to an illegitimate History that can never preserve what has truly gone by! The truth in history, which is an essential to the integrity of our knowledge must be preserved in order that we know, that we learn and that we move forward to learn the lessons from that past in order that we do not repeat the same mistakes. However, deniers do not temper their extravagant and extremist view point and history, so rightly judged by the veracity of what is known, will judge them solely upon an irrational adherence to a disguised hatred, which permeates the ether with its antisemitic resonance!

The Ethics of Morality

Testimony Posted on Thu, December 04, 2014 10:57:24

What does it mean to be Christian? To walk in the footsteps of Jesus and emulate all he taught us! Tolerance is amongst the gifts bestowed upon humanity and if humanity then grasps that defining principle, the World will resonate with a Charity that begins and ends with an acceptance of all! I am not a religious person, per se! Yet while I have approached the subject of The Holocaust from a Moral and Ethical stance, it is in my upbringing to use the advantage gained from that Moral standing to speak out for the principle of Equality for All. It is also necessary to roundly condemn those who would deny that to anyone, regardless of Race, Colour or Creed.

It is a long story why I got involved in Writing and commenting on the mass Murder of 6,000,000 Jews of Europe. However, all human beings with any sense of humanity at all will recognise the wrong that was done to these innocent Men, Women and Children of the Jewish Faith. Regardless as to what we believe, have faith in or what god we choose to have, every Human Being is entitled to the sanctity of Life. That life should be free from ridicule, with an absence of hunger, without assault and kept from destruction.

Mine is an easy choice. Remembering that 6,000,000 Jews were Murdered in the midst of a largely Christian Europe it seems incumbent upon me to add a Christian voice, albeit a rather lapsed Christian voice, to the condemnation of what was Perpetrated and what was allowed to happen! Lest we forget! The World looked idly on as the Trains were loaded with a human cargo and the Factories of Death spewed the arriving Jews out through Chimney stacks choked with the fumes of intolerance and the shroud of our indifference was cloaked in the Ash of those Jews consumed in The Death Camps.

The figures set before you represent but a proportion of that Destruction. While Hitler’s Death Squads, der Einsatzgruppe, Murdered in excess of 1,250,000 Jews, the conflagration all added to the billowing hatred we know as The Holocaust. But do not look to these figures as merely a statistical return. These are the perished lives of many Jewish human beings all adding to the Final Catastrophe which is the 6,000,000 Murdered Jews of The Holocaust!

Belzec 600,000

Birkenau (Auschwitz) 1,100,000

Chelmno 152,000

Majdanek, 200,000

Sobibor 250,000

Treblinka 900,000

Sub-Total 3,202,000 Jews Murdered in The Death Camps alone!

Always to Remember, Never to Forget.

Testimony Posted on Mon, November 24, 2014 10:45:58

ALWAYS to REMEMBER, NEVER to FORGET.

History has taught us little if we choose not to Remember the Slaughter of 6,000,000 Innocent Jews, Men, Women and Their Children in The Holocaust. We must always look toward a future that has been garnered from our past with the correct lessons to be learned. Tolerance for one another is specific to human beings and an Indifference to that Moral grounding has been widespread throughout our History! We choose to Forget at our peril because there is no guarantee that when intolerances surface, they will be directed only toward those Never exempted from Genocides, Hatreds and for those 6,000,000 of The Holocaust of The Jews of Europe, Memory must serve them Now!

We know in terms of the meaning of Tolerance, it is such a wonderful trait to be found in people. It not only broadens the Christian perception that all are born equal under God but conserves within Humanity a moral and ethical efficacy. Whether that God we speak of is the God of my own Church or whatever House of God is to be occupied by people, creation makes us all God’s Children. We might have disputes with each other over the inflection of our belief systems or even from within our own Faith but we can resolve them all with Care, with Compassion and with more than a modicum of our own Christian Charity! We are aware from The Holocaust that many individuals stood against the tide of discrimination and paid for so doing with the ultimate penalty. What we know, and when in time they had dispatched the 6,000,000 Murdered Jewish People, there were many who knew they could be next! Martin Niemuller knew! Gypsies knew! The Polish People knew! Yet, in the midst of such an intolerable burden placed upon the Jews of Europe, few responded to this hatred with any Moral value or Ethical resolve.

We know that the Genesis of the Jewish Destruction was the germ of Hitler’s hatred for them. I owe this considered assessment in great part to Raul Hilberg who undertook a study still salient to this day. Hilberg’s ambient words resonate with many of us who still seek to comprehend the enormity of the Genocide and wish to add to the historical dimension of the Destruction facing the Jews of Europe! Hitler decided that at first the Jews would be removed from the sphere of all German life! To that end they were taken out from the work place and social environment and ostracised. The Jews would then be removed from the very presence of German life by physical means. They would be railroaded, shipped into established and created Ghettos and out of sight of those local communities who might be burdened by any statement that compassion might demand! This segregation was fully achieved until finally, All Jews would be systematically removed from the very vestiges of any Life at all.

The holding stations, the Ghettos, the Concentration and Labour Camps, the Towns, Villages, Cities of Europe, were combed so thoroughly, few escaped the dragnet that Hitler had established. The establishment of The Death Camp system was that final staging post which now spelled out the Death and Destruction of all the Jews of Europe. It must be borne in mind that while all of Hitler’s institutions dealt in the death and destruction of The Jews of Europe, it was from within the 6 Death Camps of Auschwitz/Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor and Treblinka whose sole purpose was the Annihilation of The Jewish People, that the achievement was managed on an industrial scale. While not all victims were Jews, as Elie Wiesel points out so succinctly, ALL Jews were Victims!

Bibliography

Testimony Posted on Thu, October 16, 2014 15:01:38

What good minds deserve as they explore the reaches of this subject of The Holocaust, is an appreciative filtration of all that is wrong in the arena that is presented to them. In an attempt to come to terms with the terrifying catastrophe for the Jewish People, their study should not be swayed by any form of misinformation. Also, that research should not be barred by too many books which seek otherwise to distract, add inaccuracy or lack the integrity of positive research and even deny what has been the gravest tragedy to uniquely face all of mankind. There are many who insist they have a divine right to deny the veracity of this Truth of The Holocaust. They urge a ‘christian’ boycott of this awareness of the exactitude of what happened to 6,000,000 Jewish People. When we all know that Intolerance is against all the precepts of Christ’s teaching, we have to accept that, whatever Faith system a person belongs to, it is crucial we honour their God-given right to the belief they hold to!

With that said, that is why there should always be a strict adherence to the bibliographic search that many will undertake within the sphere of The Holocaust. In order to add depth to the appreciation of the subject matter they wish to explore, they must not be blinded by falsehoods that seem to present an air of historical search! Clearly, there are recognisable writers who have sought to pass themselves off as serious students of The Holocaust, but are in fact nothing more than revisionists, deniers and, in many cases, antisemitic and neo-Nazi racists. Trawl any popular site that offers books to a literate public and you will clearly recognise the brightly emblazoned credentials of the denial lobby. Theirs has a prominent ‘swastika’ and that is what links them to a murderous Third Reich. Their deference of a Hitler who would have hated these new age Nazis, as equally as he hated the Jewish People -and toward the end of his 1,000 year Reich, the German people themselves – is seen as a parody of studious endeavour.

These haters secrete their bile behind shallow art work that seeks to deceive, and their proposal of legitimacy is as absent as it is immoral. Attached here is what I would consider a worthy first step in bringing about an acceptable Bibliography of The Holocaust. I would like to include every Book that has ever been written by those who Survived, but space would not permit me to. As for the inclusion of my own three Books? There is an issue brought up, which I have to address when questioned as to my own work’s validity. My own competence in commenting on, or even attempting to comprehend what was done, and what was allowed to be done to these Jews of Europe during this period, is addressed when required to do so. So my three Books of Testimony and Remembrance nestle rather tentatively in the midst of works of great distinction, of pure merit and of incalculable resonance in the survey of words articulating the terms for The Holocaust.

As with any effort to add toward the need to Remember what went before us, the works and the words produced can be utilized to gain an understanding of events we are removed from. For the Survivor however, the words are levelled at them during a period they themselves managed to escape, and with a trauma attached to that evasion which surely haunts them to this day. That haunting too, it must be recalled, is not merely the detail of the horror, but the sense of abandonment that must have been felt as they made their way toward oblivion. From the very sidelines of history scores of people, former neighbours even, took advantage of this Jewish procession toward Destruction to gain, to assist or even to Perpetrate the very crimes we are learning of now! That is the rather pertinent consistency in wording that is required and in the many Books I will mention, the integrity of The Holocaust is consistently recalled!

Anne Frank

Testimony Posted on Thu, October 02, 2014 20:58:16

Montessori 1941.

“..reports of ..dreadful things being done to ..Jews are getting worse by ..day.” Anne Frank.

There is a literary quality to Anne’s work. She has such great merit that is way above and beyond any literary distraction. We should be more concerned with the moral and ethical eminence of Anne’s words than with any grammatical nuances that may occur. Only truth has immortality while distortion is as mortal as the lie it attempts to promote! Anne’s truth has lasted the test of time. The threat to distort her message has been driven to the fringe where those who seek to deny her relevance, putrify all of History. Anne Frank stands proud along with a host of Writers on The Holocaust.

“..long lines of good ..innocent people ..accompanied by crying children ..walking on and on ..ordered about by a handful of men who bully and beat them until they nearly drop. No one is spared. ..sick ..elderly ..children ..babies ..pregnant women ..all ..marched to their death. “ Anne Frank.

I would encourage all to read the works of Primo Levi and Elie Wiesel, even if they have no interest in The Holocaust as such. Certainly, as with all of those who advocate Remembrance of the Jews of The Holocaust, Anne Frank is at the forefront of so many Writers who wish to add to the meaning of The Holocaust. For us today, we should clearly understand the message of Anne is the hope for all future generations. For Anne, while she could barely aspire toward living to see life beyond her Young years, her own heart-felt plea must be learned. From the catastrophe that was to befall the Jews of Europe, and that includes the destruction of Anne herself, along with 6,000,000 of Her own People; the World must come to terms with such a tragedy.

“..I get frightened myself when I think of close friends who are now at ..mercy of ..cruelest monsters ever to stalk ..earth. ..all because they’re Jews.” Anne Frank.

For me, Anne is a beacon of light from within the bleakness of The Holocaust and she will light our path, should we choose the righteous way forward? We should not merely analyse Anne’s statements and take away from their meaning. Any critical analysis of the word can too easily overlook the detailed emphasis on human betrayal, on the sense of loss, on the isolation and certainly from the feeling that she must have felt, of the hatred for Herself and her fellow Jews. That despising feeling was clearly expressed, and by so many in this world, who overtly displayed such detestation toward the Jewish People, that Anne could touch the tangibility of that hatred so visibly.

“..poor people are being shipped off to filthy slaughterhouses like a herd of sick and neglected cattle. But I’ll say no more on ..subject. My own thoughts give me nightmares!” Anne Frank.

We can so concur with Anne on so many levels, and from this privileged position of perspective, which retrospection delivers to us. Knowing too that the fate of 6,000,000 Jews was surrendered to mankind’s more base incline, we can all add weight to Anne’s clarion call for an acceptance of more understanding and a humane and compassionate concern toward all of humanity. Words should always articulate the heart-felt meaning of truth and honesty and that essential integrity which has been ordained by God. Anne did all of that in her truthful words and she used them to isolate us.

“..Hungary has been occupied by German troops. ..still a million Jews living there ..they too are doomed.” Anne Frank.

Upon searching out our own sense of morality it becomes obvious we were divorced from the compassionate humanity she must have felt had so abandoned her. Anne indeed has a compassionate literary merit and it is in expressing the need for us to obey the call to Tolerance. For us to never allow Indifference to become the mark of humanity, we need to learn the lesson of The Holocaust and acknowledge the guilt that belongs to those who “looked the other way” in the Jewish hour of direst need.

“..we’re Jews in chains chained to one spot ..without ..rights ..with a thousand obligations. ..put our feelings aside ..be brave ..strong ..bear discomfort without complaint .. do whatever is in our power ..trust in God. One day this terrible war will be over. ..time will come when we’ll be people again and not just Jews!” Anne Frank.

Testimony and Fresh Memories in the Holocaust

Testimony Posted on Sat, September 13, 2014 00:35:34

The death of 6,000,000 Jewish Men, Women and Their Children can never be satisfactorily represented by even six million photographs, but the digital capture of the pictorial image is all this Witness has to affirm what my eyes have seen. The Horror and Emptiness, the scars on the landscape and peoples of 21st Century Poland, emerging from a 20th Century atrocity they seek to add to a perspective only recently and fully endorsed and embraced. Commemoration, Memorials to and a burgeoning respect for what was allowed to happen is there for all to Witness.

The Old Synagogue, Kazimierz

However, in the Abandoned Synagogues, in the former Jewish Factories, from amongst the depths of the Death Camps, amidst the debris of the Labour Camps a Jewish presence no longer emerges. In the written and pictorial records of the Survivors, a greater acknowledgement of the wrongs done needs to permeate deeper into the psyche of a European Continent less engaged in restoration than in moving further away from these dire deeds. While the sins of the Parent should not be visited upon the Child, the ill gotten gains of that Parent cannot profit any future without corrupting it

“..Jewish persecution ..taken ..most inhuman ..merciless ..deeply shaming forms ..for which no compensation can be adequate. ..Anyone who believed ..he could enrich himself with Jewish property will discover ..it ..a disgrace for any German to seek such dishonestly acquired property.” Carl Goerdeler.

Izaak Synagogue, Kazimierz

I laid some stones, in memory of Tokele and 6,000,000 of her Murdered Jewish Brethren. Rest in Peace. The practice is a very important one! It clearly shows that we Remember, that we have not Forgotten and that we have visited to pay our respects. Much of what I say, a great deal of what I relate is to do with Memory and never forgetting those Jews of The Holocaust. We stand upon the brink of something equally threatening to our way of life and times. Pope Francis can see today that what Pastor Niemoller and Primo Levi managed to blend together, that once there were no Jews left to victimise, there would be no guarantee that it ‘would devour only Jews,’ has come round to fruition.

“..where there is an unjust aggression ..can only say that it is licit to stop ..unjust aggressor. ..I underscore ..stop. I’m not saying bomb or make war ..just stop. ..means ..to stop them must be evaluated.” Pope Francis.

Schindler’s Factory

Here, the Pontiff speaks of a situation which not only threatens the Jewish State, though Israel stands full on to repel anything ‘is’ has to throw at it. But Muslims and Christians alike are under direct threat from a newer hatred hidden by religious intolerance’s. Here though is my own religious contention, and it is pertinent in that while this Pope can stand upon a political platform and issue a suggestion as to how we proceed to stop ‘is’, Pope Pius XII was not so specific in his own terms when it came to the Jewish People facing The Holocaust.

“..Whoever destroys a soul ..it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whoever saves a life ..it is considered as if he saved an entire world.” Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:9; Babylonian Talmud Tractate Sanhedrin 37a.

Photos of Some of Schindler’s Jews in the Window.

While my own Testimony has been a fresh reminder to those who come after me, who will read my work and wonder why an Irishman has steeped himself in the very aspects of a Jewish Holocaust, let them regard what they think is appropriate! If any human being cannot stand up and afford a moment or a thought of consideration for the mass murder of 6,000,000 People, and in our recent History, what does that say of his own humanity? So I stand up and face an accusation of bias, which I am! I do not deny that the Slaughter of 6,000,000 Jews is wrong on every level!

Plaque outside Oscar Schindler’s Factory

I would speak equally vociferously if I had chosen my initial work was The Irish Famine. I could so easily have been persuaded to write about the Armenian Tragedy if the photograph sent to me had been of Tokele, a 4 year old Armenian Girl. But Tokele was a 4 year old innocent Jewish Girl, a Jewish child whose only apparent crime was being born a Jew. Actually, can a 4 year old Child commit a crime? For me, and from any given perspective, had Tokele been an Irish Child I couldn’t have been any more outraged.

Stones to remind those who visit after me that I Remember the 1,100,000 Jews Murdered here from amongst the 6,000,000 Murdered Jews of The Holocaust of Europe!

Had Tokele been targeted because of the Colour of her skin, I would have been equally offended. I am mortified that a Child, any Child, can be Murdered because of Gender, Colour pigmentation let alone her Religious affiliation! I am the Child of a Parent who taught me well the distinct value of the human in Humanity!

A Book a Day, or so of suggested reading!

Max Kolbe

Testimony Posted on Tue, September 02, 2014 07:56:36

Maksymilian Rajmund Kolbe.

“..I asked ..Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns ..one white ..other red. She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. ..white one meant that I should persevere in purity ..red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would accept them both.” Maxmilian Kolbe.

There must remain a spirit of generosity which allows us to see the good in mankind. That must ensure, that while protecting ourselves against the very descent man can plummet to, we ! There have been Catholic’s, most remarkably Max Kolbe in this The Holocaust point of reference, who gave up their lives for another. This was done, all in the spirit of that Christian Charity expressed by Christ and endorsed in belief. In order for us to embrace that same regard, and somehow redeem from the past was has been so tarnished in moral Catholicism, all regard to the sanctity of all Human Beings must be as sacred as the life God has given us.

By adoption of our Faith we accept that a moral grounding is evidenced against the backdrop of lifestyles uncommon with commitment to Religious systems. We have a responsibility and a duty in this Village of a World enclosed to share with those an empathy that is not driven by impulse to degeneracy but has an efficacy shared with our fellow beings. Religious concerns, which endorse the principles of reprocity and can steer our self esteem toward a meeting with those whose own position is under scrutiny, under duress, under pressure and under constant threat. That that threat during The Holocaust was genocidal, has been evidenced and none of what I have just stated was played out by our Christian Community’s, in light of what was happening to the Jews of that communion with all of society.

Kolbe arrived at Auschwitz from Pawiak Prison in Warsaw on May 29th. 1941. He had been arrested on February 17th. for his very outspoken views against the Jewish aspects of The Final Solution. Ironically, he was now to bear witness to that final resolve. Kolbe, or Prisoner Number 16670 stood before his God and offered himself in place of Franciszek Gajowniczek, Prisoner Number 5659, and was sentenced to Death by Slow Starvation. In Auschwitz, Max Kolbe acted out his Faith and gave his life for another. He was one of 15 incarcerated in Block 11 and Survived until August 14th. 1941 when he was injected with phenol and Died.

Edith Stein in The Holocaust.

Testimony Posted on Mon, September 01, 2014 00:18:27

Edith Stein in The Holocaust.

“..As a child of ..Jewish people who ..by ..grace of God ..for ..past 11 years has also been a child of ..Catholic Church ..I dare to speak to ..Father of Christianity about that which oppresses millions. ..deeds perpetrated in Germany which mock any sense of justice and humanity ..not to mention love of neighbour. For years ..leaders of National Socialism have been preaching hatred of ..Jews.” Edith Stein.

Edith Theresia Hedwig Stein was brought to Auschwitz Death Camp, from the Carmelite Convent of Echt and dressed in the habit of her Order. As Sister Theresia Benedicta of the Cross, she was gassed upon arrival, August 8th. 1942. As to whether we should assume she was murdered for the profession of her Faith, for which she is being Canonised, or that she was simply murdered as a consequence of her Jewish antecedence, the debate lingers on.

“..Spiritually ..we are all Semites.” Pope Pius XI.

When a Church chooses not to do battle with the powers of racist and intolerant forces, Edith Stein remains benign in the face of Christ who demanded that we treat all our neighbours as we would treat ourselves. The Church then becomes the stagnating purveyor of its own decline if it does not act in that accord. Those, best able to confront anti-Christian morality must be condemned to immorality outside what Christ had demanded of us. Such a communion cannot ever invoke the encyclical of moral thought and the teaching of ethical being, without the cynicism of its position further undermining its example and its universal position.

A concordat with Hitler openly resolved the willingness of Hitler to murder the Jews of Europe and signalled from the Church an acquiescence that subordinated itself to the will of such hate-filled advocacy. When Edith Stein demanded of Pope XII that he act on behalf of the Jews, little did she know that there would be this almighty clamour to beatify her, afford her a saintly status, and within a movement that would overlook her beseeching concern for the Jews of Europe. That entreaty still seeks to sink the Catholic Church beneath a scandal seemingly condoning of the mass murder of the Jewish People.

“..responsibility must fall ..on those who brought (Jews) to this point and it also falls on those who keep silent in ..face of such happenings.” Edith Stein.

That mass murder, in The Final Solution, was equally ignored by the Church as was Edith’s plea to that Church. History still holds the Church with an amount of contempt that should have been heavily regarding of all Christian values and its proper charitable status! When we measure with this, in the starkest contrast, that the Church wishes to deliver an elaborate gift, and with such a great honour upon the former Jewish Philosopher, this Catholic Sainthood is surely otherwise motivated? For the Jews of Europe, and those whose conversion to Catholicism couldn’t even grant them security from a final solution, Edith’s Jewish antecedence certainly sealed her fate.

It would appear that the Catholic Church protest in Holland had such an adverse effect upon those Jewish converts, the SS moved more swiftly against them, and found Edith Stein awaiting the same fate as her Semite cousins. The case is well made, and thoughout our recourse to The Holocaust study, that the Jews, whether they were assimilated, Italian, German, French or Latvian, they were Jews first and foremost and victimised as a consequence. There is no doubt that Edith Stein was murdered, and though she dies a convert to Catholicism, that conversion was no more a guarantee of her safety than the many baptismal certificates that had betrayed so many other Jews.

When Edith’s voice was dulled to such an extent, so as not to allow her to speak on behalf of a beleaguered, a condemned and a devastated People, 6,000,000 Jews passed into an abyss. With a limited prospect of achieving any semblance of aid for her fellow Jews, how then can my Church so own an Edith Stein, or call her theirs when they so blatantly ignored her pleas for The Jews of the Time?

“..badge is attached ..but has not touched our consciusness. ..we are not ashamed of our badges. Let those be ashamed who have hung them on us.” Yitzhak Rudahsevski.

When we are set to judge how a convert to Catholicism might be treated in The Holocaust, it was Hitler’s system of illegality which defined who was a Jew and as such, who might be condemned. We surely must look to the former belief system of those Jews as to what marked them ahead of mainstream Catholics for The Holocaust of Destruction. What Elie Wiesel has said about such inequaliy, has a remarkable bearing upon how Edith was seen, how Edith was treated and why Edith was eventually murdered:-

“..While not all ..victims of ..Nazi’s were Jews ..all Jews were victims.” Elie Wiesel.

Herein lies the problem for those who might wish to attribute the martyrdom of such a wonderful lady to her Catholic ambivalence, she was considered above all else a Jew. Edith was murdered alongside countless other Jewish converts, all because they were Jews. When this Jewish convert asked the Holy Father to answer the call to conscience, she was ignored. The Jews were not just ignored, they were abandoned and posterity still deals with the consequences of 6,000,000 unanswered calls! Edith was finally arrested. After Catholic Church protests were raised over the detaining of converts from Judaism, a beacon of light would be switched off. It must have occurred to Edith, that while such protests arose over the fate of Jewish converts to Christianity, no such challenges were made over the Reich’s deliberrate mis-treatment of the Jews of the Jewish Faith.

As Catholics we need to continually ask ourselves, and our Church, not so much what was done, or what the Church say’s was done, but more what was not done to save the Jews. That more could have been done to at least alleviate their suffering or in some simple way afford them a fraternal look, have given them a sense that we understood what charity meant, or at a minimum what Christ would have demanded of us, betrays for us what duty in the Church has failed. When Edith herself knowingly sensed in Hitler a threat that would undo the Catholic Church, though less brutally than in dismantling the life of The Jewish People, that duty too surely betrays the wishes of St. Teresa Benedicta of The Cross.

“..fight against Catholicism will be conducted quietly and less brutally than against Jewry ..but no less systematically.” Edith Stein.

They Gave Their Voices

Testimony Posted on Wed, August 27, 2014 00:06:57

There were many Germans who insisted upon a lack of knowledge of what was carried out in their name. Many were brought into the Camps to see for themselves. Today, the German State, and the German people have acknowledged their Crimes, which is why it is part of their History. To alter that History, would be to deny to the 6,000,000 Murdered Jews of The Holocaust, their rightful place in all of History. Any portion of History altered changes all History, and when it becomes distorted, what truth remains? Germany does not belong to a past it denies! It embraces that past and possesses its Future.

While I am at it! There are Memorials all over Europe! There are Institutions all over the World dedicated to telling the World the Truth of the 6,000,000 Murdered Jews of The Holocaust. YadVashem in Israel has a very important role in Remembering. USHHM in the US plays a significant role as does The Simon Wiesenthal Centre. Smaller Centres, Beth Shalom in England, and there is a Centre in Japan all have an important part in Informing us. But crucially, the Centre in Berlin, the epicentre of Hitler’s orchestration of The Holocaust is seen as pivotal to acknowledging the Testimony required to Teach the present what was done in the past in order for the future to be more secure.

It took about two days until ..grave burned down to ..bottom. I myself observed that ..fire had glowed down to ..bottom. “..greatest ..most horrible crime ever committed in ..whole history of ..world ..done by scientific machinery by nominally civilised men in ..name of a great state ..one of ..leading races of Europe. ..all concerned in this crime who ..fall into our hands ..including people who only obeyed orders ..should be put to death.” Winston Churchill.
